It’s been a busy first week and half here in the AFIA Kindergarten classroom as we have been working furiously at learning classroom routines and procedures, socialization, and school-wide expectations and norms, all while trying to maintain the natural composure of being 5 and 6 years old! Our first few days were very hands on as we were all adjusting to such big changes, but as the days have gone on, it has been incredible to see the progress that is being made by each and every child as they adjust to the routines of a structured schedule for a 7 1/2 hour long school day, and I couldn’t be any more proud of all their hard work!

I have had quite a few parents and family members ask me questions about curriculum, or have popped in and visited during our center time, which is a free choice “play” time, and have been worried about what exactly their child has been working on and whether or not any actual learning is taking place in our classroom. Well no need to fear families, I can assure you there is plenty of learning taking place, both in small group academic learning groups AND through PLAY. However, before we can hit the road running and really tackle the academics, it it absolutely crucial that we establish a classroom that is founded on set routines and structure so that each child understands the expectations of their day and knows what is coming next, as well as how to use classroom materials appropriately, communicate with peers, and function in large and small groups settings.  Without this foundation, authentic learning will not be able to take place, which is the most important part of our year! 🙂

I’m excited about all the busy little bodies we have in the classroom everyday! These little minds are ready to learn and show such great potential for an exciting year full of so many unique hands-on learning experiences and I can’t wait for a full take off! We will continue to work on classroom routine establishments and developing a solid structure for the next coming up weeks as we integrate beginning literacy, math, and science concepts into small group learning activities and centers.  If you want to know more about what’s happening in Kindergarten please feel free to stop by and see for yourself, or contact me via my blog or email. I’m always excited to share about what’s going on in our busy classroom!
